Our History from Jesse R. 1770-1860 and Mary Trantham Rickman 1771-1837









Jesse R. and Mary Trantham Rickman married 10 Jan 1791






*Jesse died 10 Mar 1860 and buried next to both his wives in the Rickman Cemetery. Mary died in Sycamore in 1837







Sources state that in the Revolution Jesse served with the American troops from the Wilmington District of 







North Carolina. Rickman was 11 when Cornwallis surrendered and 13 when the war officially ended in 1783







*Mary Trantham is the daughter of Martin and Ann Shattock Trantham







The United (now Mills River) Baptist Church was formed in 1835. The next year, Jesse Rickman deeded to the 








trustees of the United (Mills River) Baptist Church three acres of land "where the old church now stands"











After the death of wife Mary Trantham Rickman in 1837



One year later Jesse re-married to Rhoda Taylor Gadd born 1779 died 1852

1) Nancy Rickman born 1792 died 1876 married Joseph Reed III born 1797 died 1846. They moved to Lawrence County, Indiana 








Joseph is the son of Eldad Reed II and Aeshia Lanning Reed.








2) John William Rickman Sr. born 1795 died 1841 married in 1816 to Nancy Whitaker born 27 Oct 1796 died 10 Aug 1878








Nancy is the daughter of Joshua Whitaker Jr. and Nancy Childers.








3) William Rickman (twin) born 5 Apr 1797 died 1850 married 1822 to Artemesia O.Farley born 1801 died 27 Jan 1874 








William (twin to Michael) and they moved to Clay County, Missouri.








4) Michael Rickman (twin) born 5 Apr 1797 died 1850 married 1818 to Susannah Whitaker born 11 Aug 1802 died 25 Jan 1874








Michael (twin to William) and Sarah daughter of the daughter of Joshua Whitaker Jr. and Nancy Childers.
They moved to Cooper County, Missouri.








5) Martin Rickman born 7 Oct 1799 died 8 Feb 1877 1st married 10 Sep 1865 to Sarah Williams 2nd married Jane Blocker Nicholson. 




Sarah the daughter of John Williams and Mary “Polly” Ashworth. They are buried in to Mills River in
Henderson County the Rickman Cemetery.








6) Robert Rickman born 7 Nov 1801 died 7 Aug 1837 married 1 Oct 1835 to Sarah Fourney, born Abt. 1805 they lived in Missouri.

7) Martha Rickman born 7 Nov 1802 died 1810 died around age of 2 years.








Martha (twin) to Robert Rickman. Buried in the Rickman Cemetery, North Carolina.








8) Jesse Wilburn Rickman born 7 Jan 1805 died 1870 married 1830 to Sarah W???? born 1805. 








They moved to Indiana, then to Clay County, Missouri, and finally to Calaveras County, California.








9) Rebecca Rickman born 18 Oct 1808 died 1870 married abt.1825 to Joseph Sitton born 1801 died 1870.








*They moved to Gentry County, Missouri.








10) Mary Rickman born 14 Aug 1810 died young.







Mary was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina is buried in the Family Cemetery Henderson County, North Carolina.








11) Merritt Rickman (twin) born 6 Aug 1812 died 1874 married 29 Jan 1828 to Sarah Sitton born 4 Jan 1809 died 13 Jul 1878.








Merritt (twin) to Miles. Both died in Macon County, North Carolina, and are buried in Cowee Church Cemetery.








12) Miles Rickman (twin) born 6 Aug 1812 died 1874 married 4 Apr 1833 to Rebecca Sutherland born 1816 (no death date).








Twin to Merritt died in Lawrence County, Indiana. ( Another date of birth may be 16 Aug 1812).









13) Margaret Rickman born 17 Apr 1815 died 1874 married 1835 to Jeremiah Taylor born 12 Apr 1809 died 26 Nov 1871.









They are buried in Whitaker Cemetery, Mills River, Henderson County, North Carolina.








14) Naomi Rickman born 31 Aug 1816 died 11 Oct 1832 died at 16 years.









Naomi Rickman became very ill 1832 and she asked her parents to promise her, they would bury her on the hillside









above their Mills River home, she died that year and she was the first to be buried in the Rickman Cemetery









Her Parents are both buried there. Jesse R Rickman is buried between his two wives.
